Piling mat installation involves a number of steps, including:
Design
A geotechnical engineer or other competent person should design the piling mat, taking into account the ground conditions and groundwater.
Construction
Piling mats are usually made from crushed concrete, clean-graded stone, or crushed hard rock. They can also be made from recycled demolition material, but any timber or rebar must be removed. The mat is compacted in layers and should be free-draining to prevent water from building up.
Inspection
A competent person should visually inspect the piling mat once it's constructed to ensure it's in good condition. The inspection should be recorded and photographed.
Certification
A Working Platform Certificate (WPC) must be obtained before the piling mat can be used. The WPC must be signed by the principal contractor and given to the piling contractor.
Maintenance
The piling mat should be inspected daily and any issues should be recorded. Excavations, trenches, or holes should be backfilled to keep the mat stable.
